- 1 Cor. 16:14
Fall is apple picking time. In New England, I remember the hayrides every Autumn that took us deep into the apple orchards where we would pick apples right off the trees. There were so many apples clustered together on each branch that the weight of the apples would cause the branches to bow down to greet us. The colors – oh, the colors – Macintosh apples with red and green spots, Red Delicious apples, Golden Delicious apples, Baldwin apples with stripes, etc. At first look, an apple tree full of apples is a breathtaking sight.
An even more breathtaking sight is how the Lord looks upon us. God sees us, and calls us “The Apple of His Eye.”
This phrase is mentioned several times in the bible. One of the places it is mentioned is in Deuteronomy 32: 10, which reads:
He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of His eye.
Now, would God who cherishes us and considers us the apple of His eye – not care about what is going on in our daily lives or how we feel?
Absolutely not.
It is because God looks upon us as the “apple of His eye” that He is putting us through so much testing in our daily lives, and it’s been hard. You see, God wants to bring us to a place where we no longer have fear when disaster strikes, or doubt Him when He promises to deliver us from our enemies, even when we have been waiting for what seems like an eternity.
We are coming into a time where things are going to get harder and harder, and we need to be confident in our God to deliver us regardless of the trials we are facing. We cannot be wishy-washy or waiver in our ability to trust the Lord. People who don’t know God are watching us to see how we are reacting to events around us like the high unemployment rate, the threat of war on Israel, and our dwindling food supply.
When obstacles come against us, or when a person rises up against us, we need to know we are protected under the shadow of His wings (Psalm 91), so we can be an example to others. It is the same as when a small child is frightened, and they run and stand under their parent's arm. We are to go to God with all our concerns, knowing we will be protected, comforted and loved.
When David cried out to God to be vindicated because of his enemies who spoke false words against him, he reminded the Lord that he was “the apple of God’s eye.” David was saying, “God, I know I am precious to You, and that I mean the world to You. So, I know You will fix it, and make it right on my behalf.”
7 Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand,
O You who save those who trust in You From those who rise up against them.
8 Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,
9 From the wicked who oppress me, From my deadly enemies who surround me.
In the below scripture, God is saying to any enemy who touches us, it is likened to the enemy taking their finger and poking.
For thus says the Lord of hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye. For surely I will shake My hand against them, and they shall become spoil for their servants. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me. Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord.
Have you ever looked in the pupil of your eye? You can see a reflection of things in your periphery. Being the apple of God’s eye means God constantly has a reflection of us in His periphery. He sees all that happens to us, and not one thing is missed. God never sleeps; His eyes are wide open keeping tabs on us, and warning us when things are coming our way that are harmful to us.
We can close our eyes and sleep in peace at night because God never closes His.
